"It has felt good to donate milk and be able to give something to babies who are not so lucky and are not blessed with a mother who can breastfeed them."
"I urge any mom out there, wondering if donating milk is for them, to think about how many lives can be saved."
"It felt wonderful to be able to help other moms and babies in the same way that I had been helped. It has been very special to be both a donor and recipient of breastmilk through the milk bank."
"When Milk Matters told me that preemies needed just 50ml a day to survive and I was feeding my son breastmilk all day long, I wanted to help and knew I could."
You could offer your baby the milk from a sterile cup or bottle. One of the risks of introducing bottles is that your baby may reject the breast in favour of the bottle. For this reason you could use a cup. It may also help if someone else feeds your baby. Your baby will then associate you exclusively with breastfeeding.
It is recommended that the average baby needs 120 to 150ml of breastmilk substitute for every kilogram he weighs, every 24 hours. (E.g. For a 5kg baby - 120ml breastmilk x 5kg = 600mls over 6 feeds = 100mls per feed on average.) Some babies prefer more and others less.
